NEW YORK--(AP) - The first US company to make a global version of the world's leading drugmaker's top selling drug, Lamisil, is making a big splash, and the global drugmaker, Teva Pharmaceuticals, is stepping in to help pay for the move.
Lamisil, which was the first to market its antifungal treatment, Lamisil Spray, was created as a treatment for a fungal infection that causes athlete's foot and toenail fungus and a skin infection called toenail fungus. It was a joint venture between Teva and Pfizer in which Pfizer's Lipitor and Zoloft both had patent protection. It has also entered the global market for the treatment of acne, a common skin condition that's caused by an athlete's skin infection.
Lamisil, which is available in the US as Lamisil Spray, is making an splash in the drug industry, partly to boost sales of the anti-fungal drug.
Lamisil is the first to bring in a new drug to the market that could compete with Zoloft and other drugs that have lost their patent protection. In the US, Zoloft has lost patent protection, while Lamisil is now approved as a generic drug.
The company is working with a partner for the first time, Teva Pharmaceuticals, which is developing and selling its drug, and is expected to bring the drug to the US market by the end of the year. The US market for the treatment of the fungal infection of the toenail fungus has grown at a CAGR of 8.1% during the last five years. The drugmaker hopes to generate around $2 billion in sales as it launches its first-in-class next-generation drug, the first of its kind, on Jan. 1. Teva has a strong pipeline of new drugs in the US market, but it's uncertain whether the company will be able to bring a generic version of Lamisil into the market. Teva Chief Executive Hank McKinnell said the company will focus on creating a generic version of the medicine in the US market, which is set to take place in late 2018.
"We believe the company's ability to bring the product to the US market will be based on the strong potential of the company, and we expect that will be a key focus of the company in the coming years," McKinnell said.
Lamisil is not expected to reach the market by the end of the year, but its US patent protection could help Teva make a splash in the US market and help to pay for the company's new drug, which could compete with Zoloft and other similar drugs.
"The company is already committed to developing a generic version of Lamisil for the United States market, which is set to take place in the next few years," McKinnell said.
